Pity the Furloughed Government Drones
All these poor government workers not receiving a paycheck. Not being able to pay their rent or mortgage or car payment or credit card bills or even put food on the table. Sucks for them. Perhaps they should have put some of their exorbitant pay aside for times like this. After all, a government job is one of the best paid and most secure. Regardless of poor performance, immoral or illegal actions, getting fired is almost unheard of, and prosecution just about never happens, unless you are a whistleblower. Can't expose the swamp.
The vast majority of these federal workers (and most state and local workers as well) are performing tasks that have nothing to do with their constitutional and moral duty to defend out rights. As opposed to private sector workers who actually produce something, a government worker produces nothing. A private sector worker's value and compensation is determined by what he produces and the demand for his skill in doing so. The pay for a government employee is based not on value but how much money can be stolen from the producers to pay him or her. With the immoral and unjust powers granted the IRS and other agencies, they can steal a lot, or as much as they desire. So they steal, hire swarms of bureaucrats whose duty it is to establish and grow government power, pay them well for their immoral work, and hire more.
So let's take a look at these poor, underpaid government workers forced to do without at the moment, barred from harassing the rest of us with their jobs. Overall, in pay and benefits, a federal employee receives 17% more in compensation than their private sector counterparts. (CBO) But the results are very different for different educational levels. We want to pity the poor government workers at low level jobs living paycheck to paycheck. Yet these are the employees who make out like bandits! If you work for the government and have a high school diploma or less, your pay and benefits are 53% higher than your peers! So if you're a poor shlub making minimum wage, your taxes go to pay your high school drop out friends in government 53% more, with paid health care to boot. Graduate college? Working for government will net you a 21% premium. (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2010) It is only the really smart folks who could be making millions with their ideas in the private sector, those with masters or doctorate degrees, who make less, but we shouldn't pity them with their six figure salaries and inordinate power to make our lives miserable.
Here are some real numbers. Adding benefits like health care and retirement (do you get these?) average federal government employee compensation was $127, 259 in 2016 while private sector compensation was $70, 764. That is a $56, 495 disparity! And the disparity is only getting worse. And even with that, 40% of government workers said they were dissatisfied with their pay! (2018 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government) Ungrateful #!@&*s. So a federal employee performing a task whose only function is to harass and steal from us works less, an average if 12 hours a week, gets paid more with lavish benefits, has wonderful job security and regular advancement with raises regardless of performance and we poor citizens who have to foot the bill for this are supposed to feel sorry for them? Not me.
